Browser extension guide: install one safely, or skip it

TickClip runs entirely in the page you already have open, so there is nothing to install here. This guide is about judging other extensions before you trust them.

A browser extension is a small program that runs inside your browser and can read the pages you visit. That is exactly what makes download helpers convenient, and exactly why an extension deserves more scrutiny than a website: once installed, it keeps that access until you remove it or revoke the permission.

This project does not ship an extension. Parsing happens on our server through the same form you find on every tool page, which means you can check the result before anything is saved to your disk, and there is no background code with access to your browsing.

What an extension can see

An extension with the right permission reads the page after it loads, including the parts you are not looking at. That is how it recognises a video element and offers a download button, and it is also how a malicious update could read a form you are filling in.

Nothing about that is unique to download helpers. The same trade-off applies to password managers, ad blockers and accessibility tools. The useful question is not whether an extension can see your pages, but whether the job it does needs that access.

  • Needs access to the sites it lists: a download helper that only activates on video sites can be written with a narrow host permission.
  • Needs access to everything: justified for an ad blocker that works anywhere, questionable for a tool that downloads video.
  • Needs cookie or clipboard access: a strong signal, and rarely necessary for downloading a public video.

Why this site takes the other route

Resolving a link on the server means the logic lives in one place. When a platform changes how it serves media, the fix ships once for every visitor instead of waiting for an extension update in each browser's review queue.

It also keeps the trust boundary where you can see it. You paste a URL, you see which formats came back, and you choose what to download. No code is installed on your machine, and there is no standing access to any page.

If you want a second opinion on a specific extension, the browser's own extension settings page shows the permissions currently granted to it, which is a better source than any review.

यह कैसे काम करता है

  1. चरण 1

    Check the publisher

Open the extension's store page and read who publishes it, when it was last updated, and how many users it has. A recent update from a named developer is a better sign than a silent listing that has not changed in years.

  2. चरण 2

    Read the permissions

A downloader normally needs access to the sites it supports. Access to all sites, your cookies, your clipboard or your browsing history is a much larger grant, and the store page lists it before you install anything.

  3. चरण 3

    Start with one

Install a single extension, use it for a while, and remove it if it misbehaves. Several download helpers installed at once tend to fight over the same page, and it becomes impossible to tell which one broke a site.

यह टूल असल में क्या करता है

Install from the vendor store

Chrome and Edge use the Chrome Web Store, Firefox uses addons.mozilla.org, and Safari uses the App Store. Installing from anywhere else means trusting a file rather than a reviewed listing.

Review before you trust

The permission list, the update history and the privacy policy are on the listing page. If a download helper wants to read every page you open to download one video, that trade is worth questioning.

Remove what you stop using

Extensions keep their access while they are installed. Removing one you no longer use closes that access, and it takes a few seconds in the browser's extension settings.

सीमाएँ और ज़िम्मेदार उपयोग

  • TickClip is a website, not an extension: there is nothing to install for this tool, and any listing claiming to be our official extension is not ours.
  • Store review catches some abuse but not all of it; an extension can be sold or silently updated after you install it, so re-check the ones you keep.
  • Sites change their markup constantly, so extension-based downloaders break more often than a server-side parser that can be fixed in one place.

Browser extension guide से जुड़े सवाल

Do I need an extension to use TickClip?
No. Every tool on this site works in the browser tab you are already using: you paste a link, the server resolves it, and the file is downloaded by your browser. There is no companion extension, no installer and no background process.
Is a downloader extension safe to install?
That depends on the specific extension and its publisher. Read the permission list and the update history first, install only what you need, and prefer a listing that names a real developer over an anonymous upload. No general answer is possible, and any page claiming otherwise is guessing.
What permissions should raise a red flag?
Reading data on all websites, access to cookies, clipboard access, history access, and the ability to run code on pages you never intended to modify. A download helper that only works on the sites it lists needs far less than that.
