YouTube Shorts Downloader

Vertical 9:16 clips, handled as their own link format rather than forced through the watch-page path.

Shorts are ordinary YouTube videos published in a vertical 9:16 frame with a shorter maximum length, and they are addressed by a different URL shape: youtube.com/shorts/VIDEOID instead of youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEOID.

Because the link shape differs, several downloader tools fail on Shorts links specifically. This page documents how we handle that path, and what the output actually looks like on your device.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Copy the Shorts link

From the Shorts player, use Share then Copy link. You will get a youtube.com/shorts/... URL. Both that form and the equivalent watch link work here.

  2. Step 2

    Paste and resolve

The server normalises the Shorts path, extracts the 11-character video id, and queries the backend. The link family is recorded so the page can tell you it is a vertical clip.

  3. Step 3

    Choose an MP4 rendition

Shorts are almost always progressive MP4, so the list is short: pick the highest resolution your device handles well. Vertical 1080x1920 renditions are usually the top option.

What this tool actually does

Shorts-specific link parsing

The /shorts/ path is parsed directly, so you do not need to convert the link into a watch URL yourself. Query parameters such as the sharing feature tag are discarded before the backend sees the URL.

Normalised, not raw, URLs

The id is re-extracted and the URL rebuilt server-side, which means tracking parameters from a share sheet never reach the parsing backend.

Aspect ratio kept intact

Nothing in this pipeline re-encodes or letterboxes your video. What the backend lists is what you get, in the original 9:16 frame.

Formats you may see

These are the containers this pipeline can surface. Whether a specific one exists for a given video depends entirely on what the source and the backend provide.

Limits and responsible use

  • Shorts that are only available through a signed-in or age-verified session will fail, and that failure is reported rather than retried indefinitely.
  • We do not stitch multiple Shorts together, add captions or remove watermarks.
  • Very new uploads may take a short while to appear in the backend's inventory.
  • The maximum downloadable resolution is whatever the backend exposes, not a fixed promise.

YouTube Shorts questions

What is different about downloading a Short?
Mostly the link format and the frame. Shorts use the /shorts/ID path and a vertical 9:16 canvas. The parsing pipeline accepts both link shapes, but recognising the Shorts path avoids a class of errors where a tool tries to read a watch page that does not exist for that URL.
Can I download a Short on a phone?
Yes, the interface is responsive and the download button uses a normal browser download. On iOS, Safari may open the file in a viewer instead of saving it; use the share sheet to save to Files or Photos afterwards.
Do I need to convert the Short to MP4 myself?
No. Shorts are served as MP4. If a row in the results is a WebM video-only stream, that is the exception rather than the rule, and it is labelled as such.
