YouTube to MP4

Pick a rendition your device already plays, or understand exactly what still needs a muxing step.

The phrase convert to MP4 is slightly misleading when it comes to YouTube. For most videos the platform already stores an H.264 or VP9 stream inside an MP4 or WebM container, so nothing needs converting; you only need to pick the right rendition and, at higher resolutions, combine the video and audio streams.

This page focuses on that decision: which rendition plays everywhere, which one is smaller, and when a real transcode is unavoidable.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Paste the video link

Any supported YouTube link. The results panel filters to video containers so MP4 rows are not buried under audio-only options.

  2. Step 2

    Choose progressive or split

A progressive MP4 row means video and audio are already in one file and will just play. A video-only row at 1080p or above gives better quality but arrives silent.

  3. Step 3

    Download, then mux if needed

If you took a video-only rendition, pair it with the matching M4A audio row and combine them locally with a tool such as ffmpeg. This site does not proxy or re-encode your file.

What this tool actually does

Container filtering

The form can restrict results to video containers so that audio-only rows do not clutter the choice for someone who wants a picture.

Honest muxing guidance

Rows default to informational labels but can be marked as mux hints, depending on deployment. This page never claims to run a server-side transcode that is not configured.

Size estimates where available

When the backend reports an approximate byte size, it is shown so you can decide before starting a large download on mobile data.

Formats you may see

These are the containers this pipeline can surface. Whether a specific one exists for a given video depends entirely on what the source and the backend provide.

NameContainerNotes
H.264 / AVCmp4The compatibility baseline. Hardware decode on essentially every phone, TV and browser.
AV1mp4Noticeably smaller at the same quality, but decode support is still uneven outside recent hardware.
VP9webmEfficient and widely supported in browsers; not a file you want to hand to older editing software.
M4A audiom4aThe pairing partner when you need to mux audio back into a video-only rendition.

Limits and responsible use

  • No server-side transcoding is performed by this site. Converting between codecs is a local, CPU-heavy task.
  • Re-encoding always loses a generation of quality compared with downloading the original rendition.
  • We cannot offer a resolution the source does not have. Upscaling is not conversion.
  • Re-uploading downloaded material to another platform may breach that platform's terms even when the download itself was permitted.

MP4 Converter questions

Is downloading an MP4 actually a conversion?
Usually not. If a progressive MP4 rendition exists, the file is already H.264 or AV1 inside an MP4 container; you are copying it, not converting it. Real conversion only happens if you deliberately re-encode afterwards.
Why is my 1080p download silent?
Because you picked a video-only stream. YouTube splits high resolutions into separate tracks. Download the matching M4A audio row and mux them together locally; this site deliberately does not hand you a file that looks complete but is not.
Can I convert on the server so I get one file?
Not on this deployment. Server-side transcoding of long videos is expensive in CPU and bandwidth, and it is intentionally not enabled by default. The architecture leaves room for a separate, self-hosted processing service if that becomes a real requirement.
